Capturing the details of a
subject are what drive me to paint; the nuances in the play of light and
shadow, and the complexities of color. These details are especially
sensitive in the human figure.
These complex details are not always found in painstaking brush strokes, but can also be captured in loose strokes that are almost mistakes. I'm not trying to create a "photo-realistic" work but to capture the "real-life" of the subject. I want the viewer to have a true sense of the dimension and texture. The indirect painting technique of the old master style - color glazes over a monochrome underpainting - I believe holds its own delicate precision and luminescence that is not found in other techniques. I'm continuously striving to perfect this technique, learning and adjusting with each painting. ~ Joshua Campbell |
